The BCCI confirmed the news on Wednesday after announcing the squad for the three-Test tour, saying that Kohli had requested the board to select him in the A squad
Virat Kohli and many other senior players was not part of the Indian team that played three ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals in Zimbabwe recently.
This will be his second full series in charge of the Test team – he led in the one-off Test in Bangladesh recently which was drawn
Kohli averages 45.73 from 34 Tests, but has not played a Test in Sri Lanka yet.
The Indian team departs from Chennai on August 3 for the Sri Lanka series.
India’s last tour of Sri Lanka was in 2010, when the three-Test series was drawn 1-1.
“It is great. It is fantastic that Virat wants to come and play. In fact, he spoke to me almost three weeks ago wanting to play at least one match in the series,” Dravid said.
“It is nice that he is very keen to play and prepare himself for the Sri Lanka tour. He wants match practice and we are happy.”
The India A coach added that it will be a great opportunity for the youngsters to prove themselves in front of national team captain.
“It is always nice to have the Indian captain (in team) and I think it will be great boost for lot of the young guys in the team who want to impress the captain. It is better way to do it in front of him. He is playing in the same eleven,”
Kohli’s presence will boost youngsters, Dravid too said.
Dravid said it shows Test captain’s intent and keenness to prepare himself for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour.
