Mathews: ‘What an absolute turnaround it was. I am speechless. It was a great effort by the whole team. It was a poor performance from the batting unit in the first innings, but we came back really strong and hard. It was a challenging wicket and I thought Chandimal was brilliant and he single-handedly gave us a fighting score. Rangana was outstanding with the ball as well. The wicket was pretty demanding. We were down and out for the first three days so we just thought we should give our best shot. The spinners were outstanding. They had three spinners and the wicket was turning a lot, so we had to be aggressive. We just couldn’t play forward defence, we had to play the sweeps and the reverse-sweeps and it worked.
Kohli: ‘We got no one to blame, but ourselves. Credit to Angelo (Mathews) and his team for playing good cricket today. We failed to capitalise after taking the first five wickets (in the second innings) and Sri Lanka dominated from there. One bad session and things can turn around quickly, that is Test cricket. Credit to Rangana (Herath) for the way he bowled, he’s a world-class bowler, bowled attacking lines and put our batsmen under pressure. The pitch behaved strangely. Angelo chose to bat, I would have done the same, but the ball started spinning on the first day, Ashwin came into the game. But it played really nicely in the second innings. We thought the wicket would be more difficult to bat, but credit to the way Chandimal and the rest batted. They really kept Sri Lanka in the hunt’
Chandimal: ‘It was not an easy wicket to bat on. I just tried to be aggressive and played the sweep and reverse-sweep and I am happy that it worked. I tried to rotate the strike, also credit to Sanga, Mathews, Thiri and Mubarak as well. Initially I didn’t have a target in mind, but later I thought anything over 175 will be very good. Herath was also brilliant.’
